Dr Xiaowei Wang is a researcher at the Baker IDI Heart and Diabetes Institute who specialises in atherothrombosis and vascular biology. The Harold Mitchell Health Fellowship allowed her to travel to the 79th European Atherosclerosis Society Congress in Gothenburg, Sweden, where she received valuable feedback on her work from a panel of experienced clinicians and scientists.
The meeting also provided Xiaowei with an opportunity to build international collaborations and sustainable networks with like-minded, enthusiastic scientists.
“My research focuses on the detection of thrombus in blood vessels with ultrasound imaging,” says Xiaowei. “The successful translation of this research will enable diagnosis of thrombosis, as well as the ability to monitor for the success or failure of treatment. With increasing healthcare costs, the use of the cheaper ultrasound imaging in detection of molecular targets could potentially reduce the need for other expensive procedures and (lead to) suitable therapeutic action much earlier.”
“I would like to thank the Harold Mitchell Foundation for their generosity.”
