Dr Nick Wong is a senior research officer at the Murdoch Children’s Research Institute who specialises in childhood leukaemia. The Harold Mitchell Health Fellowship enabled Nick to attend the Third Annual Epigenomics and SNPomics meeting at Harvard Medical Center. “It was an opportunity to both showcase my work and also network with the top researchers of the field of epigenetics in human development and disease.”
He also dropped by the University of California to exchange ideas with Associate Professor Joe Wiemels, a world-renowned expert on the epidemiology of paediatric leukaemia. “My visit to Joe Wiemel’s laboratory was very fruitful,’ says Nick. “I met some of his team and shared my expertise in DNA methylation analysis with the group while they shared their results with me.”
“We agreed that there were many synergies between our projects and to move forward it would be best for us to collaborate. With our combined expertise and access to leukaemia cases, it made sense to be working together.”
“My trip to America was very productive, given the collaborations I have established and the networks I have formed ... I am most grateful for the support from the Harold Mitchell Foundation for this trip and believe the outcomes far exceed what was planned.”
