Holly Yeatman is a researcher at the Florey Neuroscience Institute. The Harold Mitchell Health Fellowship enabled her to travel to Paris in 2011 to present her work at an international conference on Alzheimer’s Disease. “If I had not received the award, I probably would not have even considered attending such a conference, due to the cost involved in travelling to Europe.”
Holly’s PhD is on the function of insulin-regulated aminopeptidase in the brain and how this may be altered in Alzheimer’s disease. As a result of attending the conference, she has become “more confident in explaining my research to others, including academic and industry researchers.”
“This conference was attended by over 4000 people and so represented an ideal opportunity to network and gain exposure for my research. We have received enquiries from several pharmaceutical companies regarding the commercial potential of my project and this has led to the initiation of further experimental work on my return to the laboratory.”
“Research presented during the symposia and plenary sessions has added to my understanding of the field, and the presentation by the French president highlighted the importance of my field of research. I also attended student classes on the preparation of manuscripts and alternative careers in neuroscience.”
“This was definitely a valuable experience in my development as a professional scientist.”
