Dr Catherine Barrett is a researcher at LaTrobe University who specialises in sexual health. The Harold Mitchell Health Fellowship allowed her to attend a conference of the International Association for the Study of Sexuality, Culture and Society Conference in Madrid, where she presented a paper on the need to educate aged care service providers about the sexual health of older people. An abstract of the paper was included in the prestigious journal, Culture, Health & Sexuality.
Dr Barrett has since exchanged ideas with a number of researchers she met at the conference. She says that “the knowledge I gained by attending the conference assisted me to reconceptualise my work” and its ‘scope” has since expanded.
“I currently coordinate a broad range of research and education projects promoting the sexual health of older people. This includes research for the primary prevention of the sexual assault of older women and research to understand the needs of older GLBTI Australians.”
